Description

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) Fynbos Node, under the National Research Foundation (NRF), is offering a 12-month internship for a graduate with a strong interest in hydrological sciences. The intern will assist in digitising and mobilising historical hydrology data, preparing datasets for analysis and publication, and supporting both fieldwork and digital communication efforts. This role provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with hydrological data management, scientific communication, and stakeholder collaboration, all within a nationally significant environmental research platform.

Responsibilities

• Digitise and mobilise hydrology data in the SAEON Fynbos Node data archive
• Prepare analysis-ready data
• Curate datasets for uploading to the SAEON Observation database portal
• Learn about the data collection process
• Contribute to website development through blog posts or news articles
• Support fieldwork and in-field data collection
• Update hydrology data sets
• Work with data stakeholders

Qualifications

• MSc degree in Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, or a similar field
• 0–1 years of relevant experience
• Valid Code B driver’s license will be advantageous
• Demonstrable technical, analytical, and practical skills related to hydrological or ecological sciences
• Experience in data management and data analysis
• Strong understanding of hydrological processes and instruments
• Good scientific writing and communication skills
• Ability to analyse data and use statistical packages like R, Python, or similar
• Understanding of hydrological principles or hydrology models
• Development of web applications for visualising data will be beneficial
• Familiarity with SAEON data
• Willingness to travel to remote locations nationally and internationally
